Hi friends! What are some of your most favorite places you’ve ever been? Is it a memorable vacation spot you visited with your family? Or a place you used to live? Or the first place you ever traveled to on your own?
Jane here from Sustain My Craft Habit, one part of a sister duo where we create nature inspired DIYs and crafts. I am so excited to show you how to make personalized keychains that will capture a fond memory of a place you love. For me, that place is New York City, specifically Manhattan, where my husband used to live and where I happily went to visit. And since it has meaning for my husband as well, I plan to give him one of these personalized keychains as an unexpected gift.
And be sure to pop by our blog where you’ll find a free printable template for our DIY miniature gift boxes which are perfectly sized for these personalized keychains.
Materials needed to make your own personalized keychains:
- EnviroTex Jewelry Resin Kit
- Paper Road Map (any destination of your choosing) [TIP: if you don’t want to destroy your original map, make a photocopy to use for the keychain, or head online and print an image of your map]
- Jewelry Bezel
- Ultra Seal multi-purpose sealer / glue (or any clear craft glue)
- Scissors, small paint brush
- Gloves, paper towels, straw
- Wooden Stirring Sticks
How to make personalized keychains:
Preparing your Keychain Bezel:
Trace the bezel onto a piece of scrap paper to determine the size of the map you’ll need. Cut the paper and trim away at the edges so it fits inside the bezel.
Once you have the right size template, trace it over top of your road map. Cut the map out accordingly.
Using a small paint brush, apply a good amount of clear glue to the inside and inner edges of the bezel.
Also, apply clear glue to the back side of the map cut out and place it inside the bezel. Gently push it down to squeeze out the excess glue.
Apply a coat of glue to the top side of the map. Put it aside to dry fully before moving on to the next step.
Applying the resin to your personalized keychains:
Work in the well ventilated area and be sure to read all the instructions on the products before beginning your project. Ensure that your resin bottles are warm to the touch before starting for best results.
Mix exactly equal amounts of Resin and Hardener into one measuring cup. Just a small amount is needed to fill one bezel.
Stir continuously for 2 minutes, scraping the sides of the container.
Pour the mixture into a second cup and stir for an additional minute, scraping the sides of the container and stir stick.
Pour the resin into the prepared bezel and fill to just over the brim to create a dome like appearance. Ensure the bezel is level.
Gently blow off any air bubbles that have risen to the surface of the resin (you may need to repeat this a couple of times during the initial curing process). Cover the pieces to keep dust out and let cure overnight. 24 hours for a soft cure and up to 72 hours for full cure.
Attach to your keychain and enjoy the sweet memories of your earlier travels. Make a pair of them and gift one to your partner and keep one for yourself (as I did).
With any great DIY, I love the versatility of this project. The EnviroTex jewelry resin kit and other required supplies are very similar to what is needed for making jewelry, even the bezels can be used as pendants instead of keychains!
