Rugs that wrinkle up and slide across the floor are not just annoying, but they can be dangerous, too. The best way to keep rugs from sliding or curling is with Fiber-Lok non-skid rug backing- an amazing product made by ETI, your favorite source for resin products!
Hi, Resin Crafters, it’s Bre from Average But Inspired, and I’m so excited to solve all of your slip-sliding, curling rug problems!
If you’re anything like me, you’ve tried just about everything to keep your rugs in place and prevent them from sliding across the floor or curling at the edges. Whether it’s carpet tape (that either damages your flooring or leaves a nasty, sticky mess), rug pads (which inevitably end up sticking out from underneath the rug), or a rug with backing that crumbles off over time, nothing seems to work well. See what I mean?
I thought I was destined for a life of slightly askew rugs until I learned about ETI Fiber-Lok non-skid rug backing. So, of course I jumped at the chance to test it out and give you the must-have details that will definitely keep your rugs from sliding.
What is Fiber-Lok Non-Skid Rug Backing?
Fiber-Lok is a natural rubber material that is painted onto the back of rugs, including latch-hook rugs, punch needle rugs, crochet rugs, and your regular “bought it at the big box store” rugs. It can even be applied to rugs that have old, flaky non-skid backings that are coming off. Stated another way, you can use Fiber-Lok on just about any kind of rug.
It dries clear and adds an amazing non-skid surface that will keep any rug to which it is applied from moving.
And, one of the best things about it is that rugs coated with Fiber-Lok are still machine washable and dryable! Hooray!
P.S. Fiber-Lok is also perfect for use on placemats, table runners, and the bottoms of slippers!
Supplies Needed to Apply Fiber-Lok Non-Skid Rug Backing
Now that you know a little bit more about what exactly Fiber-Lok is, here’s what you need to apply it to keep a rug from slipping, sliding, and curling.
- ETI Fiber-Lok non-skid rug backing
- Paint brush with bristles OR paint roller
- Safety glasses
- Rug (of course!)
How to Keep Rugs from Sliding with ETI Fiber-Lok
First things first – while Fiber-Lok is a safe material, it can be an eye irritant. Because of that, it’s recommended that you wear safety glasses when applying it to any surface.
Once you have safety glasses on, open the container in a well-ventilated room and let the accumulated odor dissipate.
Then, get to work painting a thin layer of Fiber-Lok non-skid rug backing onto the back of the rug. You can do this with a bristled paint brush, or by pouring a small amount of Fiber-Lok onto the back of the rug and spreading it out with a paint roller.
Work in small sections to cover the entire back of the rug with a coat of Fiber-Lok, and then let it dry. Drying time will be anywhere from one hour to several hours. You’ll know that Fiber-Lok is dry and ready for a second coat when it is no longer white.
Wash out your brush or roller in cold water (hot water will cause the Fiber-Lok to set up quickly and ruin your brush or roller), and set it aside.
No later than twelve hours after application of the first coat of Fiber-Lok, apply a second coat of Fiber-Lok just as you did the first coat.
Wash out your paint brush or roller just as you did before, and wait for the Fiber-Lok to dry. (While you’re waiting, why not read some other Resin Crafts Blog posts to kill the time?)
Once dry and ready for use, Fiber-Lok will be clear and have a slightly rubbery feel to it.
Simply lay the rug where you want it and it’s ready to go!
It will not move out of place, even if you intentionally try to shift it around with your feet.
Fiber-Lok non-skid rug backing is one of those products that makes you wonder how you lived without it for so long. It’s such an easy way to keep rugs from slipping and sliding, and even better than that, it’s extremely effective, too!
